Lucky Shamrock Shake

This Lucky Shamrock Shake will remind you of a boozy version from that fast food place, only way better because we added Lucky Charms cereal and crème de menthe! It’s creamy, minty, and so delicious!
Call us crazy, but adding cereal to a milkshake should definitely be a thing if it isn’t already. We loved eating cereal growing up, and we especially enjoyed the “cereal milk” at the bottom of the bowl. You know…the little bit of leftover milk that had all the flavors from the cereal. This milkshake is all about the flavors of ice cream, cereal, cereal milk, and tons of minty goodness. It’s a winning combo that the grown up kid inside you will love.
Plus, shamrocks are lucky, so adding Lucky Charms cereal seems like a no-brainer! The marshmallow-y cereal flavor gives this adult version of a shamrock shake a touch of whimsy (and who doesn’t love whimsy?). The added crème de menthe and fresh mint give it a shamrock green hue and minty freshness. This Lucky Shamrock Shake is just FUN!
What is a Shamrock Shake?
A shamrock shake is a popular mint and vanilla flavored milkshake sold at McDonald’s around St. Patrick’s Day. It’s creamy and minty and has a festive green tint.
If it’s not March or you aren’t feeling like waiting in long drive-thru lines, you can make your own copycat version at home with this recipe!
Why You’ll Love Our Lucky Shamrock Shake
- Grown-up kid vibes. Being a kid had its perks. Recess, summer break, not having to worry about paying bills…[sigh] But being an adult is okay too because we can choose to have milkshakes whenever we want! And we can spike them if feel so inclined. Which, sometimes, we do. Especially when it comes to this milkshake.
- It’s easy being green. The crème de menthe has a bright green color, which makes this milkshake look super festive. Plus, you decorate the top with whipped cream and Lucky Charms marshmallows for extra fun!
- Don’t drink alcohol? No problem! You can easily leave out the crème de menthe and substitute it with a little regular milk and some green food coloring to make it look the same. Amp up the mint vibes by using more fresh mint and a splash of peppermint extract.
- It’s a milkshake. What’s not to love?
Ingredients in the Shamrock Shakes
This recipe makes 2 milkshakes, so if you want more, be sure to double the recipe. To make these lucky shamrock shakes, you’ll need the following ingredients:
- Lucky Charms cereal – use both the cereal and the marshmallows for this part. It gets pulsed into a powder, mixed with milk, and then blended in with the ice cream to give the milkshake the unmistakable sweet vibes of this childhood favorite breakfast cereal.
- Milk – use whatever kind of milk you prefer (whole milk, 2%, 1%, nonfat, non-dairy…whatever you like).
- Crème de menthe – we love the flavor of crème de menthe in grasshopper cocktails, so it seemed like a good idea to add it to these milkshakes too. It provides a nice minty taste and the shamrock shake’s characteristic green hue.
- Fresh mint leaves – in case you were worried this recipe didn’t have anything fresh, here it is. We love using fresh mint in recipes. It’s one of our favorite herbs and it really brightens up what would otherwise be a pretty rich drink.
- Vanilla ice cream – use your favorite vanilla ice cream here.
- Toppings – top these milkshakes with whipped cream and some Lucky Charms marshmallows!
How to Make these Lucky Shamrock Shakes
To make these milkshakes, first pulse the Lucky Charms cereal (cereal and marshmallow pieces) in a food processor until it is a fine powder. Mix the powdered cereal with the milk until it resembles the texture of cooked oatmeal.
Add the cereal and milk mixture to a regular blender. Add the crème de menthe, then the fresh mint, and finally the ice cream on top.
Blend everything up until the milkshake is smooth but still thick (over-blending will thin it out).
Pour the Lucky Shamrock Shakes into glasses and top each with whipped cream and extra Lucky Charms marshmallows.
