Rachel: I’m not a fan of margarita mix because they always taste fake to me. The fresh citrus makes such a difference, and the sweetness of the orange is really great with the subtle spice in the sweet and smoky rim.

Emily: The rim is what makes this one for me. Sweet, smoky, salty, spicy. It’s super easy to make and it really works with the fresh orange juice.

- Easy enough for beginner cocktail makers. Anyone with a cocktail shaker, a pitcher, or even a large glass and a spoon can make this.
- The sweet and smoky rim makes it feel restaurant-worthy. Yes, you could just do salt or sugar, but the sweet and smoky mixture gives this drink more flavor and uniqueness.
- Can be scaled up into a pitcher for parties. You can make this recipe as is (for 1 drink), or follow the instructions to make a pitcher of the best orange margaritas you’ll ever have.
- Easy to make into a mocktail or lower proof version. See our notes below for a version using zero alcohol and a version using only half of the alcohol.
Before You Start (Reduce Overwhelm)

Ingredients in The Best Orange Margarita Recipe
- Simple syrup – you’ll need equal amounts of white sugar and water. Use drinking water for best results.
- Sweet and smoky rim – white sugar, salt, chili powder (a blend of other spices), and chipotle powder (just ground chipotle peppers).
- Citrus juices – freshly squeezed orange juice and lime juice.
- Tequila – use tequila blanco for balanced and mild tequila flavor.
- Cointreau – for rich, smooth orange liqueur notes. You can also use triple sec, but it’s less smooth and sweet.

How to Make Orange Margaritas at Home
Learning how to make orange margaritas is surprisingly easy. Once your simple syrup and rim mixture are ready, the cocktail comes together in just a few minutes.
Make the simple syrup. Combine ½ cup of sugar with ½ cup of water in a pot set over medium high heat. Cook the sugar and water, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves, about 4 to 5 minutes. Remove the pot from the heat and allow the mixture to cool slightly.
Make the sweet and smoky rim and prep the glasses. Mix the ingredients in a shallow bowl or plate. Run an orange wedge around the rim of a glass, and then press the glass into the sugary, smoky, salty, spicy mixture until the rim is coated. Set the glass aside. Alternatively, you could brush the side of the glass with the orange juice and then press the side of the glass into the rim mixture.
Shake up the margarita. Add the margarita ingredients and a handful of ice cubes to a cocktail shaker. Place the lid and cap on the shaker and shake a few times to combine.
Pour it into a glass. Add some ice to the rimmed glass. Remove the cap from the shaker and strain out the liquid into the glass. Garnish with an orange and lime wedge, if desired.
Our Tips for Making The Best Orange Margarita

Easy Orange Margarita Variations
- Make it spicier: add extra chipotle powder to the rim or muddle a few jalapeño slices into the shaker.
- Make it smokier: replace the tequila with mezcal.
- Make it triple citrus: add lemon juice to give this even more citrus flavor.
Mocktail and Low-Proof Versions
If you don’t drink alcohol or are cutting back, you don’t have to miss out! We’ve got no-proof and low-proof options for you.
- Non-alcoholic mocktail version: rim a glass according to the recipe instructions, then add ice and the same amount of orange and lime juices as the recipe states. Add your desired amount of simple syrup and skip the tequila and Cointreau. Fill the glass with club soda, tonic water, or flavored sparkling water, like our favorite sparkling coconut water with yuzu from Trader Joe’s.
- Low-proof version: if you drink alcohol but just want to reduce the amount, you can make these orange lime margaritas with just tequila and no Cointreau. Or you can cut the amount of tequila and Cointreau in half. Both options would give you just 1 shot of alcohol per drink.

Storage and Make Ahead Tips
These citrus margaritas are best served freshly made, but you can do some of the steps ahead of time to make your life easier when you want to drink them.
- Make the simple syrup beforehand. This recipe makes about ¾ cup of simple syrup. Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 to 4 weeks. You can also freeze it in ice cube trays.
- Mix up the rim early. This recipe will make more sweet and smoky rim than you need for one drink, but you can store the extra for more drinks later. As long as it stays dry (wetness will cause the ingredients to clump together), you can mix up the sweet and smoky rim a day or two before you need it.
Instructions for Making a Full Pitcher of Fresh Orange Margaritas
This recipe makes 1 drink, so if you want to make a pitcher, we recommend multiplying the margarita recipe by about 6. You’ll need:
- 12 ounces of fresh orange juice (1 ½ cups)
- 6 ounces fresh lime juice (¾ cups)
- 9 ounces of tequila (1 cup and 2 Tbsp)
- 9 ounces of Cointreau (1 cup and 2 Tbsp)
- 3 to 6 ounces of simple syrup (6 Tbsp to ¾ cups)
The recipe for the simple syrup makes enough for 6 drinks, and the sweet and smoky rim ingredients make enough for about 5 or 6 drinks too.

A Citrus Margarita That’s Worth Making Again
We love classic margaritas, but this citrus margarita finds the perfect balance between sweet, tart, smoky, and refreshing. Between the fresh orange juice, lime juice, and flavorful rim, it’s the kind of cocktail that disappears fast whenever we serve it.

I’ve made a double batch, blended/frozen version and it is delightful! Just threw it all into the blender. It also kept in the freezer (just needed a bit of time in the fridge to thaw out a bit).
Glad to hear that a double batch worked for you! And a frozen version would be wonderful.
