How to Make an Affogato with Banana Mocha Ice Cream
This coffee and ice cream dessert has just 2 main components: espresso and banana mocha ice cream. It’s a satisfying blend of sweet and slightly bitter. Using frozen bananas instead of traditional cream in the ice cream makes this version even more unique! If you’ve ever wondered how to make an affogato with non-traditional ice cream, we’ve got you!

Why We’re Loving This Frozen Treat
- It combines two things we love: coffee and ice cream. We’re huge fans of coffee ice cream and coffee drinks, and this dessert beverage is the perfect blend of those two things.
- It’s a great way to use up overripe bananas. Now you will have another way to use up overripe bananas instead of always making banana bread with them!
- Replacing cream with bananas adds nutrients, flavor, and cuts down on some of the heaviness. Bananas are sweet, fruity, and good sources of fiber, potassium, vitamin B6, and vitamin C. There’s definitely richness in this affogato (it has sweetened condensed milk, after all), but using bananas brings some balance.
Ingredients in the Banana Mocha Affogato
- Frozen bananas – bananas make up the base of this ice cream. Make sure to freeze the bananas fully before using them. The riper the bananas, the better.
- Sweetened condensed milk – this provides sweetness, richness, and additional creamy texture. For a non-dairy alternative, use coconut sweetened condensed milk.
- Instant espresso powder – the espresso powder adds bitterness and coffee notes to the ice cream. If you don’t drink caffeine, you can use decaffeinated coffee powder instead.
- Unsweetened cocoa powder – we love using Dutch cocoa powder for its deep chocolate flavor and rich color, but any unsweetened cocoa powder will work.
- Sea salt – a touch of salt adds balance to the ice cream.
- Espresso – use your favorite espresso (regular or decaf). We recommend using 1 to 1.5 shots per affogato.
- Blend frozen bananas until smooth
- Add sweetened condensed milk, espresso powder, cocoa powder, and salt.
How to Make an Affogato with Banana Mocha Ice Cream
STEP 1: Make the banana mocha ice cream. Blend the frozen bananas in a food processor until they’re smooth. Add the sweetened condensed milk, espresso powder, cocoa powder, and sea salt to the bananas and blend until fully combined. Pour the ice cream into a freezer-safe container and freeze for a few hours or overnight, until frozen and set.
STEP 2: Make the affogato. Put 2 large scoops of the banana mocha ice cream in a glass or bowl. Pour a shot (or 1.5 shots) of hot espresso over the ice cream in the glass. Enjoy with a spoon and some biscotti before drinking the rest of the espresso.
