A Couple Notes On Peaches
There are many different varieties of peaches. Depending on the type, they may be easier or harder to open and have a sweeter or subtler flavor. It’s a good idea to pick your peaches not only based on availability, but on how easy they are to use and slice and the flavor profile you want.
Clingstone vs. Freestone
If you’ve ever wondered why some peaches pull right away from the pit and some stick and turn into a juicy mess, they’re actually different kinds of peaches. For extra ease, look for freestone peaches. They’ll be easier to work with, but ultimately, it doesn’t really matter for most recipes, including this one. They’re all delicious and will work great in a crumble!
Yellow vs. White Peaches
This recipe works best with yellow peaches because they have a bolder flavor than white ones. White peaches are a little softer in flavor and may get overshadowed by the brown sugar and crumble. If you love white peaches though, go for it.
How To Pick A Ripe Peach
To pick a ripe peach that’s great for a peach crumble, you’ll want to check both the color and texture or feel for ripeness. For yellow peaches, you’ll want some that are yellow and red on the outside instead of slightly green. A ripe peach will also be slightly softer and will give a little when you squeeze it gently. You don’t want it too soft or it’ll be mushy or bruised.

Ingredients in the Easy Homemade Peach Crumble
To keep things super simple, we like to separate this recipe into 2 parts: the peach filling and the crumble topping.
Peach Filling: Just 4 ingredients
- Fresh yellow peaches – ripe but still a little firm. We don’t find it necessary to peel the peaches but if you prefer it, go for it!
- Brown sugar – nice, caramely balance to the juicy peaches.
- Lemon juice – just a bit to balance the flavors.
- Cornstarch – helps to keep the peach juices from being too liquidy or runny. If you like a less juicy crumble, you can use 3 tablespoons of cornstarch instead of the 2 in this recipe.
Crumble Topping: Just 4 ingredients (one is a repeat from the filling)
- All-purpose flour – forms the base of the crumble.
- Brown sugar – adds a sweet, molasses flavor and a little moisture to the crumble.
- Melted butter – holds the other ingredients together.
- Salt – for balance and because all good desserts need salt.
How to Make This Brown Sugar Peach Crumble
- Prepare the peaches. To prep them, cut the fruit away from the pit, then slice. They don’t need to be perfectly uniform. They’ll bake up great no matter what.

- Prep the oven and baking dish. Preheat the oven to 350°F and lightly butter or spray your baking dish so that the crumble doesn’t stick to it later.
- Mix peach filling ingredients. Stir the sliced peaches with sugar, cornstarch, and lemon juice. The peaches will start releasing liquid as they sit.
- Make the crumble topping. Start by melting the butter, then stir the flour with the melted butter, followed by the sugar and salt.

- Assemble the crumble. Add the peach filling to the baking dish. Sprinkle crumble over peaches. Squeeze some of the crumble together to form clumps as you distribute it on top of the fruit.
- Bake. Bake the crumble for 30 to 35 minutes or until it’s slightly bubbling around the edges and golden on top.
- Finish and serve. Remove it from the oven and let it cool slightly. Serve warm (not hot or you’ll burn your mouth) by itself or with vanilla ice cream on top.
