Of course! Feel free to substitute ground chicken, turkey, pork, or even your favorite non-meat option (be sure to use vegetable broth if you're trying to avoid meat altogether).

Yes! We’ve actually made this exact recipe with non-dairy milk and plant-based butter and it turned out great. Just substitute your favorite plant-based varieties for the dairy versions in this recipe.

Can I make this shepherd’s pie with beef gluten-free?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. You’ll just need to skip the flour and make sure to check that your beef broth is gluten-free. You’ll need to use gluten-free flour that’s a 1:1 substitution for all-purpose flour in the roux. Alternatively, you could skip making the roux and add the broth to the veg and meat. Then mix 1 to 2 tablespoons of cornstarch (more cornstarch = thicker gravy) with 1 to 2 tablespoons of water to make a slurry add that to the broth and meat/veg mixture. Cook for a few minutes until the liquid thickens.

Question 5

I have a saute pan or braiser that is oven safe. Can I bake the pie in that so that I don’t have to dirty up another dish?

Yes! We’ve made this recipe in a braiser before and it worked out well. Just cook the meat, vegetables, and gravy in the braiser or pan on the stove, then add the layer of mashed potatoes on top and put the whole dish in the oven to bake. You’ll just need a dish that’s big enough to fit the beef and veggies and mashed potatoes.
