How to Make the Best Cottage Cheese Bowls
Cottage cheese bowls are one of our favorite breakfast options. They’re super easy to make and fun to customize. We love topping cottage cheese with fresh ingredients and proteins that have various flavors and textures. For the best cottage cheese bowls, we like to follow the same basic formula:
- 1 cup of cottage cheese
- 1 to 2 cups of fruits, veggies, and added protein (meat, nuts, nut butter, eggs)
Nutrients and Health Benefits of Cottage Cheese
We grew up eating cottage cheese every now and then, but it wasn’t an everyday meal for us. Over the past couple of years, we’ve seen a rise in recipes featuring cottage cheese, and we have to admit that we’re happily on board this continuing trend!
So what makes cottage cheese so popular? Aside from how easy a breakfast it is, it’s also super nutritious. Cottage cheese is a high source of calcium, protein, and vitamin B12. It’s also relatively low in calories and a good source of vitamin A and potassium. Cottage cheese can help with bone health, thyroid function, and may help with weight management. Cottage Cheese Bowls: The Sweet Ingredients
A great thing about cottage cheese is that it can be used in both sweet and savory dishes. Here are some ideas for sweet versions:
Berries and Almond Butter Bowl

- Cottage cheese – cottage cheese is usually found in grocery stores near the yogurt or other dairy items. It is sold with both small and large curds, and in full fat or low fat versions. We prefer the low fat, small curd options with these recipes, but any cottage cheese will work.
- Berries – feel free to use whatever berries you like best. We like to make this bowl with fresh strawberries and blueberries.
- Almond butter and almonds – a little unsweetened, unsalted almond butter and some slivered almonds give a satisfying nuttiness and extra protein to this dish.
- Honey – we like to add a drizzle of honey over the top of the fruit for a hint of sweetness, but you can leave this out, if you want.
Peaches and Cream Bowl

- Cottage cheese – again, any brand and type of cottage cheese will work.
- Peaches – fresh peaches are best, but if you can only find frozen, just be sure to thaw them first.
- Walnuts – we love the slight bitterness of walnuts, but if you’d rather use a different nut, go ahead. You can also leave these out if you’re allergic.
- Honey – a little drizzle of honey adds some sweetness to the bowl.
- Mint – we like to add a few mint leaves for freshness.
Cottage Cheese Bowls: The Savory Ingredients
Here are some ideas for savory cottage cheese bowls:
Lox and Cucumber (Everything but the Bagel) Bowl

- Cottage cheese – as with the sweet bowls, use your preferred cottage cheese.
- Smoked salmon – we like to use cold smoked salmon (sometimes called Nova lox in stores).
- Cucumber – Persian cucumbers work great because they have thin, mild skins and aren’t super watery like other varieties.
- Red onion – we like the color of red onions in this bowl, but if you prefer another kind of onion, go for it.
- “Everything But the Bagel” seasoning – we use store-bought seasoning, but you can definitely make your own too.
Bacon and Eggs Bowl

- Cottage cheese – use your favorite kind.
- Bacon – feel free to use any kind of bacon (pork, turkey, beef, plant-based, etc.).
- Egg – we like to soft boil our eggs for this bowl, but you can hardboil or even fry them, if you want.
- Avocado – we love avocados with our bacon and eggs, and they’re excellent with cottage cheese too.
- Chili oil – a little chili oil adds just the right amount of pizzazz to this breakfast.
Tomato & Basil Bowl

- Cottage cheese – you know the drill.
- Tomatoes – we like small tomatoes here, like grape or cherry, or little baby tomatoes on the vine.
- Basil – sweet basil brings a subtle herby freshness to this breakfast option.
- Olive oil and balsamic glaze – for extra bruschetta or caprese salad vibes, we like drizzling a little extra virgin olive oil and balsamic glaze.
- Salt and pepper – just a hint of flaky salt and cracked black pepper will make this bowl pop with flavor.
